Ready to Start?
When can you start prepare baby proofing? Early on parent should be mindful of child safety.
1. Encourage Safe Movement Development
- Tummy Time (from newborn age): Builds neck, shoulder, and core strength. Supervised tummy time helps prevent flat head syndrome and improves motor development.
- Rolling, Sitting, Crawling, Standing: Let these skills develop naturally. Avoid baby gear that limits movement (e.g. jumpers, walkers) too early.
- Use toys and gentle guidance to encourage safe reaching, crawling, or cruising.
2. Promote Core Strength & Balance
- Balance-based play: Sit the baby on a soft ball (like a therapy ball) and gently roll side to side/front to back while holding them.
- Let baby reach across midline (e.g. grabbing a toy with the opposite hand) to encourage balance and core strength.
3. Support Sensory and Spatial Awareness
- Use textured mats or blankets to help the baby explore with their hands and feet.
- Let baby experience different floor surfaces (carpet, tile, soft mat) to boost proprioception (body awareness).
4. Baby-Proofing + Environment Setup
- Pad sharp corners and secure furniture to the wall.
- Use non-slip rugs or mats where baby plays or practices walking.
- Keep a clear space for crawling and exploring, free from small objects or hazards.
- Place toys just out of reach to encourage crawling and safe transitions (like sitting to crawling).
5. Monitor Transitions and Standing
- As baby starts pulling to stand or cruising, show them how to fall safely—yes, even babies learn this! Slow, controlled sitting down is a skill they can build.
- Help them practice bending knees when lowering themselves instead of just dropping.
For babies under 1 year:
- Use a sleep sack or wearable blanket instead of a loose blanket.
- Keep the crib free of loose bedding, pillows, and stuffed animals.
After 12-18 months:
- If your baby is rolling over well, has good head and neck control, and is no longer swaddled, you can gradually introduce a lightweight blanket.
- Start with something small, breathable, and thin.
- Always keep a close eye to see how they handle it.
